You can just add a small amount of resin to a bottle of the water and leave it for a while and not need a column as the resin sinks to the bottom of the bottle.

You may try complexing iron in the reduced form (+2 oxidation state) with bathophenanthrolein and removing the complex using solvent extraction. Iron in 3+ oxidation can be reduced with a number of agents including thioglycollic acid or ascorbic acid.

The simplest solution is to treat with chelex-100 resin (sodium form; Sigma product C7901) and filter the resin using a 0.2 u filter. You probably need 5 to 10 mg of the chelex resin per mL of water sample.

You may look at the publications of Juan Moreno and Mark Evans. Treating buffers with chelex-100 resins to remove transition metal ions (especially iron) appears to be the most common practice. For example, a phosphate buffer of 0.1 M prepared using analytical grade reagents may have up to 5 to 10 uM Fe (III) if one goes by the limits of trace metal contamination provided on the data sheets by manufacturers.
