D614G mutation in spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 appears to be more deadly because it causes higher transmission rate of COVID-19.
There is circumstantial evidence that D614G mutation in the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 is associated with a higher mortality (1). Because this mutation also increases the infectivity of the virus, with increased number of COVID-19 patients (2), total mortality also increases.
However, it needs a big multinational comparative study of the mutations in SARS-CoV-2 in different countries to define infectivity and mortality associated with different mutations.
