A colleague and I are attempting to do a study on cyber-bullying and online victimisation in a same-sex attracted under-age sample (high school age). Particularly, we're interested in how victimisation might inhibit the decision to disclose (i.e., coming out) which in turn will lead to limited access to coping etc.
The problem we are facing is hot to get parental consent from a population who would not want their parents to know the nature of the study. Does anyone have any suggestions about creative (without deception) protocol ideas, etc?
Given the way you state the constraints I think you might be stuck. Depending on what you want to know, have you considered an online study where you cannot know about the respondents except what they choose to tell you? (I had a student did this on sex chat rooms and she did it two way anonymous for safety.) It seems to me that qualitative researchers are odd about identification. If you are interested in a decision process and you think respondents are genuine, why do you need to know exactly who they are? If they make something up then they will get washed out by the rest of the sample. Of course, you still need to ensure informed consent and mustn't recruit explicitly in terms of people being of an age that would require parental consent.
Another approach would be to take the offensive and argue "wider public good". (Perhaps with support from NGO/advocate.) How else can this research be done by its very nature?
