While running qPCR and using small volumes, I want to ascertain that I am pipetting accurate volumes. I have observed some large variation in my sample quantities.
I am not sure what volumes you are using, but if you have a very sensitive balance then you can simply pipette distilled water and weigh it. This will give you an indication of your pipette's accuracy and repeatability.
Yes, you can do what Dr. Du Plessis recommends. However, I am lazy. I'd just send the pipette back to Rainin to have it checked and re-calibrated. Their standard service plan only costs $39 for a single-channel pipette.
Here you can find a pipette calibration check manual (user protocol and factory manual) and a calculation table. I have made it for further purposes. It's very practical. I have used it many times. If the values outside accuracy ranges you should send your pipette(s) to certified calibraction laboratory to set it correctly. This table is only for check the accuracy.
