Very little success has been documented on successful crosses of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) and yardlong bean (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp subsp. sesquipedalis). Is there any recent developments on successful hybridisation of these two subspecies?
Crossing of cowpea and yard long bean is difficult. Avoid injuries during emasculation which cause shedding of the emasculated flowers. Pollination should also to be done carefully again to avoid any damage to the crossed flower. Further application of a particular growth regulator may promote success rate of crossing.
This group on RG seems to have some experience in crossing cowpea and yardlong bean to incoporate long pod trait from yardlong bean into cowpea. From their report, the successful rate in crossing is very low (only about 3%). You may ask them for recent progress.

I have not been able to find any useful information pertaining to that. but I haven't given up. I plan to source some germplasm for yardlong bean to start trying out the crosses soon. Maybe we could collaborate on this?
Hi Gloria, that sounds good- I will send you a message. I have also just found a recent paper where they describe the progreny of a cowpea x yardlong cross, but not how the cross was done. I will try reaching out to the authors to see if they can share any tips.
