What is the average concentration of free tryptophan present in a bacterium?

In my laboratory we want to develop an assay to detect the presence of pathogenic bacteria in water through the production of tryptophan, but we are having difficulties finding previous data indicating the average concentration of free tryptophan present in a bacterium. Therefore, we cannot compare our results with the experimental results of other labs.

I think it would depend a great deal on which microorganisms were present and on the growth conditions. Moreover, free tryptophan might originate from other sources besides pathogenic bacteria. A more decisive and sensitive method of detecting any particular species of bacteria would be PCR of environmental DNA using probes specific for individual species of pathogenic bacteria.
