I do not think it is the correct procedure for preparing ZnO Nanoparticles by thermal decomposition/evaporation method. Firstly, the ZnO would not melt/evaporate as its melting point is 1,975 °C. Instead you take zinc metal and melt it in a tubular furnace in the flow of oxygen and control the flow of oxygen. As melting point of Zn is around 420 °C, it would melt and evaporate at little higher temperature. It would be oxydised by the surrounding oxygen to form ZnO. Keep the substrate little away from the melt you would get a nanocrystalline film.

If you wish to prepare nanoparticles in powder form decomposition of Zinc Acetate would not give you nanoparticles as the starting material itself is in microcrystalline for so the decomposed ZnO would also be in microcrystalline form. You have to try sol-gel/combustion methods using urea or citric acid. Make the solution of Zinc Acetate/nitrate, put appropriate amount of NaOH/KON for hydrolysis. Then put urea/citric acid solution for its gelation, let the gel dry and then decomposition. You may find several papers on sol-gel method/combustion method. It's easy to prepare.

Hi Hussam Sir,

I agree with Prof Sahare. I don't think that putting a Zinc salt like Zinc acetate in oven might work. You can follow the sol-gel route. Put 5mM of Zinc acetate in pure ethanol and stir it under 60o for 30 min. Then spin coat in on a substrate. This recipe is well establish.

However, I do not believe in these results. They have neither given any SEM or TEM images which could have confirmed the morphology (shape and size) of their nanoparticles. Sometimes, broadening of XRD peaks may be due to some artifacts or instrumental limitations. The formation of nanoparticles may be possible at low temperatures where the particles do not agglomerate. But, the starting material needs to be in nanocrystalline form. You can not make nanoparticles from by decomposing microcrystalline ones. Moreover, they have not compared other optical and electrical properties with the microcrystalline particles. Therefore, it is difficult to believe in their results. It is important to understand that if the nanoparticles are embedded in a medium which gets decomposed later like in sol-gel or combustion methods, we could have better control on the particle sizes. Also the changes in their properties are better seen for their particle sizes below 10-12 nm. But, of course, you may try different methods of preparation.
