How can I resolve animals not performing on the Morris Water Maze test?

I'm current performing Morris Water Maze test in C57BL/6 mice, but many animals are just flotting in the pool insted of swimming. This behavior is causing impairments in my analysis. I would like to know if someone had the same problem and how to fix it. Thankyou!

Hi Ana! The reason may be that mice are too comfortable in water. This, in turn, may be caused by temperature conditions. Normally MWM protocols recommend the water temperature of 26C. If the water is too warm, mice could feel no discomfort from it and have no stimulus for searching the platform. On the other hand, if water is OK, but room air temperatures are too high, mice can stay in MWM water as a relief.

I'd recommend trying a cool water in MWM (not cooler than 20-22C though) and withdrawing from experiments with animals in a too hot weather. Best of luck with your research!
