I apply voltage (AC, DC and pulse) to biological cell monolayers using 30nm thick gold electrodes. My observations are significantly affected by electrolysis (formation of gas bubbles). Moreover, when the voltage exceeds a certain threshold (2.5V) the electrodes dissolve into the culture medium.
The layer/metal below gold is even more sensible to corrosion. Add a protection layer to protect the gold electrode edges.
Re-design the experiment if the cell layer is the target for your applied voltage.
If i used teflon as protection layer, will the voltage still be applied to the cell monolayer?
Can you suggest any protection layers?

This is an image of my interdigitated electrodes after application of 2.5V dc for 5 min. The +ve electrodes have started corroding.
