I'm trying to model this geometry (Fig. 5 in the attached file) using kinematic hardening in ABAQUS, and I have been stopped for unknown reason, Could you please guide me especially how to assign the Boundary conditions, cyclic loading at the top to get horizontal load-displacement hysteresis curves (Fig 8)? How can I model the beam in FEM scheme?

Hi Qusay,
It is actually pretty much straightforward. After modeling your column as "PART" in ABAQUS, assigning material to it through the "PROPERTY" module, and bringing it to the "ASSEMBLY" you should go the "LOAD" module and apply "BOUNDARY CONDITION" to the top region of your column as a "DISPLACEMENT" type. Of course, you should define a "STEP" before applying the boundary condition. While applying the boundary condition you should only select [place a check mark] the direction [e.g. U1] that you want to apply the cyclic displacement and give its value as 1. Finally, apply your cyclic loading scheme using the "AMPLITUDE" tab; as I have briefly shown in the attached figure.

Thanks. Honestly, I know all these steps but my question is more specific as follows:
1- Since we agree about how to apply the cyclic loading pattern using Amplitude function, it seems the problem related how to assign the boundary condition at the top of the column ( Thin-walled column, t=16 mm), I used RP and made link constraint to apply the the load in this RP (If I ignore the beam in the top), does that work?
2- As seen in the figs., the load is applied on a point on the top of the beam not directly to the column, my question is: how can I model this beam and link it to the RP point on the column?

1. I think if you omit the beam, your approach [using a Reference Point and link constraints] should work.
2. If you model the beam, I think you should use a "BEAM MPC constraint", taking the beam end as the master and the column perimeter nodes as the slaves.
