When you have decided on the antibiotic that you want to prepare, check the literature for methods of synthesizing it. Then check suppliers' catalogues for 13C-labelled starting materials, intermediates or reagents that you could use. If there are none, you must modify the synthetic pathway in order to be able to insert a 13C-labelled reagent (like, for example 13CO2 or 13C-acetate or 13C-nitrile).
