I am trying to reduce the particle size of Calcined Alumina and Kaolin mixture by dry ball milling in Jar Mill but I am not getting required results. So, what can I do? Which Grinding Aid I can use in order to improve the milling?
Dear Ms. Kuppili During dry milling, the surface energy of oxide particle will be increasing. So, the hydroxyl segments will connect the surface of particles from the atmosphere. Then, the hydroxyl bonding will be made among the powder-particles, moreover between powder-particles and media-balls or wall of the mill. Therefore, the aggregation of particles and the adhesion of particles on the milling media (balls) or the wall of mill will occur during dry milling. Both the aggregation and the adhesion will disturb the grinding. So, you could the trace amount of additive that has both the hydrophilic factor and the hydrophobic factor in the molecule structure. For example, it is n-butanol, Methyl ethyl ketone, Methyl isobutyl ketone and so on. However, the process control of the adding is the most important. If the additive is added into mill simultaneously, the powder would be aggregated. It is important to add the additive into the mill bit by bit and keeping the constant time interval. Please try this method.
