There are “classic” inverters, that take single phase supply, rectify it to DC and then produce a 3-phase system out of the DC by using IGBT bridges and a carrier wave. The same principle can be applied to produce any number of phases, but we are talking theoretically here.

In my years of work in this field, I have never heard of a 5-phase application. Never seen a 5-phase generator or a 5-phase motor or any appliance.
