I would like to make a beam splitter by a glass for a specific angle. First I calculated the thickness of the partially reflecting layer by using of the transfer matrix then I coated this layer by aluminum. But when the light at a certain angle was incented I did not see any change in the reflection and transition instead of without layering mode. Is my method wrong؟ also will the calculated thickness be different from the thickness of the coating layer so that the aluminum can reflect light with a certain percentage? and is there a threshold thickness for this situatian?
A beam splitter is usually made of glass and a film of another transparent substance with a different refractive index. The thin aluminum film made by vacuum deposition will be rough, and the refractive index and absorption coefficient will be different compared to the data for the bulk sample. So, choose another substance. The details of the simple model can be found in “Principles of Optics” by M. Born and E. Wolf. You also may read my paper published in RSI 2002 for simplicity. I used a similar algorithm to calculate thickness in multilayers structures.
