I am working on Arc welding process simulation. I am trying to make a heat source model based on goldak's double ellipsoidal volumetric heat ditribution.
initially i applied heat source on point(node), then i tried on volume(Cube), then Cylinder form, then ellipse form. but i dont know how to define second ellipse at a time. I dont know how to apply different load on different ellipses at same time.
An ellipsoid has three parameters – a, b, c. In case of double ellipsoid, parameters b and c will be same for both the (quarter) ellipsoids while the parameter a (in the direction of the motion of arc) will be different for the two. Thus the two quarter-segments of ellipsoids will merge properly in the middle. I hope you are modeling the process using conduction-convection approach (Ref 1). There, if both the quarter-ellipsoids are modeled as separate bodies (in the CAD model), it will be a simple matter to supply different rates of heat input in these two bodies. I have not mentioned any software in particular because most of commercial software should be having this provision in one form or other.

In LSDYNA, you can use *BOUNDARY_THERMAL_WELD (see LSDYNA keyword manual I), this is based on the work of Goldak

In APDL just use a IF & ELSE statement in which check whether element falls in front or in rear part. Based on location of ellipsoid you can use two different equations.

In APDL, you can firstly select some nodes inside your ellipsoid and use the command CM to define them as a node group. Then you can apply the specific heat source to this node group. For different ellipsoids you just need to do the process separately. For example in my case I use: bf,nodef,hgen,%front%.
You may check the attached paper, particularly in Fig.10 and the corresponding descriptions. Hope it can be helpful.

Sir , in ansys how to select all the nodes that fall inside the cone?( i am trying to simulate using conical heat source)
I am also trying to model Goldak heat source in LS-DYNA, but i think i am making some fundamental error.. as my heat source is not moving. Can anyone tell me how i can remove this error.
