I am trying to do an MIC of chloroxylenol alone. Ideally starting at 1-4%. The chloroxylenol will only seem to dissolve in 50% ethanol minimum, otherwise, as soon as I add any amount of water or broth it'll immediately crystallise. If I use this huge percentage of ethanol then I wont be able to prove the bactericidal effects are because of the chloroxylenol. As I did an MIC of ethanol and everything died at
You must use the 50% ethanol solution (diluent) as blank. Make dilutions with this solution and perform the MIC test. Compare each results with the original blank. Greater effect will be due to the amount of chloroxylenol. To determine the MIC you will need to discount the possible effect of the 50% ethanol solution. It will not be the perfect solution but you can have results.
Try using some other solvent for dissolving chloroxylenol like glycerine which has least microbicidal effect.
