I am looking for any possible sign of development of my students’ critical consciousness by comparing the journals that they have written throughout the study. I initially wanted to categorize them into the three levels of consciousness that are available in the literature, and find out if an increase toward the last level could be observed. However, my problem now is that the descriptions of these levels in the literature are very much open to different interpretations. For example, the literature describes the last level as having deep and sound arguments and involving a refusal to transfer responsibility and rejection of passive positions. But what really is a deep and sound argument??

I cannot easily categorize each journal into one of these three levels. I also think that this type of classification seems to be too much subjective. I would really appreciate it if you gave me any suggestions on making this classification more confirmable and less subjective.
