Today, cheaper and more efficient solar panels or solar thermal system are available to harvest more of the sun's rays, it's storage that needs a breakthrough so that solar energy can be used when the sun's not shining. So, please suggest most efficient and least expensive way to bring solar energy to consumers even when the sun isn't shining.
An example is using solar energy for hydrogen production via pyrolysis of biomass. This is discussed in the below mentioned article. Happy new year.

I am impressed by the work reported on recycling polyolefins; but I am not sure about pyrolysis. You need to control the process very accurately or else you land up with carbon (~ coal) which is not very desirable. The biological pathway to me looks best but it doesn't seem to be direct enough! If you can come up with a better method as good as the biological one but bypassing much of the intermediate steps then you have indeed made good progress. Best wishes with your research!
