Bentonite is activated for mineral oil treatment using acid, thermal or chemical activation. Acid activation (using H₂SO₄ or HCl) enhances adsorption by increasing porosity making it ideal for bleaching earth. Thermal activation (300–500°C) removes moisture and improves surface area. Chemical activation (with Na₂CO₃) enhances swelling and cation exchange aiding in waste oil purification. Acid activation is the most effective method for refining and decolorizing mineral oils.
