15 December 2016 2 3K Report

Hi all,

I would like to do stress analysis of geological discontinuities (natural fracture, rock bridge, etc) in the cavern by Abaqus 6.14.

First, we did scan the cavern from LIDAR scanner to get point cloud. Then, as you know, the point cloud data can be meshed by using a few software (meshlab, I-site, rhino...) as surface mesh. But the problem is here. As the cavern geometry is so complicated, there are lots of irregular (overlap, hole, ...) meshes, which can not be extrude to create a 3D solid element.

Even, I don't know Abaqus can generate 3D mesh based on this 2D surface mesh or if Abaqus can't do that, what are the alternatives for Abaqus to get nice solid mesh?

In my opinion,

I feel that I have to use professional meshing tools (Hypermesh...) to get solid element before importing it to Abaqus.

Any ideas how to solve this problem?
