For analyzing HMF and sugars/sugar alcohols using an RI detector, the Aminex HPX-87P, Agilent Hi-Plex H, and CarboPac PA1 HPLC columns are recommended based on their selectivity, resolution, and suitability for various sugar and HMF compounds.

You can use Amide C18 based columns.

C18 column can provide fast elution of HMF, and Amide column may retain the analyte for longer time as compared to other C18.
