Ilse, what do you mean by "comparing hierarchical regressions with mixed models"? The word hierarchical is used differently than "multilevel".

Analysing each time point separately is not necessary and wrong. You can form a mixed (or a multilevel) model considering your covariates and time points altogether.

I analysed my data for the first year with hierarchical regressions, not considering the longitudinal part. So just my complete data set seen as 1 study on it's own.

Now I have the second longitudinal data set, so analysis will be with, I think, multilevel model.

More specifically, I am predicting maths scores with multiple predictors (some control measures and other predictors). Am I right in thinking I can't put them in hierarchical order when using multilevel models?

Ok, now your question is more clear. Yes, I am not aware of any hierarchical multilevel modelling. You can try different models and compare them instead of hierarchical regression.

There is an obvious confound here named 'hierarchical linear modelling' which is another name for multilevel modelling (maybe some subset of it). Contrary to its name, it is not what you are after.
