I have to calculate the percentage of multiple codings in my nVivo files. I've coded 13 files and some paragraph overlap in codes. I want to report that percentage of overlapped nodes (coding that has more than 2 nodes) in my research paper.
Without details of how the nodes are overlapping it might be difficult to assist appropriately . However, I suspect that the problem stems from you created your initial nodes. If you define your codes properly overlaps may be avoided.
You should have main codes and child nodes instead of those overlaps. I suggest that you revisit the NVivo Tutorials on coding and redefine your nodes in a way that will avoid overlaps. You should remain with a series of "mother' and 'child' nodes.
I agree with both the previous answers! If you are getting a lot of the same portions of your transcript double coded, check to make sure your codes are not too narrow. Perhaps they can be combined into a larger node that encompasses both the smaller ones. Secondly, sometimes there are overlapping nodes. I am not sure what benefit there would be to reporting on the percentage of overlap? if you just want to discuss how some of the information provided by participants can be interpreted in a number of ways, or falls into two or more distinct themes, you can say that without having to quantify it.
