I have a set of DEM's produced from GeoSAR data (in Surfer 10) for a number of different case study regions. I was wondering whether anyone was familiar with or knew of any published research papers which looked at (semi-)automatically detecting lineaments? I would preferably like to do this in ArcGIS, but obviously if this isn't possible then would ERDAS or ENVI be good alternatives?

There is many method to extract lineament from satellite image or Digital elevation Models, and if you have data produce in surfer you can convert it to hillshad and then you can used the PCI Geomatica to produce lineament or you can download DEM from http://ws.csiss.gmu.edu/DEMExplorer/ only register and you can download your data or you can use image satellite from USGS and done your work in ERDAS

We have conducted a semi-automatic analysis to derive lineaments from a DEM (http://www.hydrol-earth-syst-sci.net/15/2665/2011/hess-15-2665-2011.html). It is combination of linear filtering and a subsequent object based classification. If needed I can provide you the ERDAS model for the linear filtering step. The object based classification was done with Image objective for which you need a seperate license.
i suggest to use PCI Geomatica for lineament and dip direction extraction using DEMs.
