We have an unusual set of reaction conditions (can't say what for) but basically I have a reaction in acetonitrile to which I add conc H2SO4 (1 equiv). The reaction proceeds but slowly and in moderate yield. When I repeat the same reaction but add the HCl salt of Hunig's base (1 equiv) as well as the conc H2SO4 (1 equiv) the reaction proceeds very fast and in high yield. My first guess is that the Hunig's base.HCl salt is acting as a PTC but I'd like to hear thoughts. We are now running the reaction in the presence of a R4NX PTC. Will let you know what happens! The use of conc HCl instead of conc H2SO4 does not affect reaction rate or yield.
