Does any colleague out there have access to a desk-top NMR? If so are you happy with the instrument? What typical experiments do you run? What problems do you encounter? Which make and model would you recommend and roughly what price is reasonable for a good instrument.
Our 300 MHz Instrument just went to pieces and we need a cheap solution. Any advice would be welcome.

We first tried a 45 MHz desk-top NMR and it was not a convincing experiment. I will test the 80 MHz soon.
Major advantage: easy to use, no deuterium solvent are needed.
Major drawback: the very high concentration! the required sample quantity may be too high for research lab,

I have not used desk top NMR but I have discussed with marketing personnel for desk top NMR , from that what I understood is, it is not useful much for personal research ,but it is quite useful for some industries for their routine quality control analysis. eg. oil industries, textile industries etc.
Bench top NMR systems generally operate at a low field (45-80MHz). The higher field systems often have a limited sample area. This leads to two things:
1) lack of dispersion - at 60MHz many signals will be overlapping and non-first order.
2) Lack of sensitivity - signal to noise on these systems is very low compared with your 300MHz system
You can't get around these things - physics is mean to NMR! There are situations where low field NMR is suitable but I suspect not for you.
It is reasonably easy to work out whether a bench top system will work for you - just look at the sample amounts you have and the molecular weight of the materials that you want to analyse. If the weight can be less than 10mg and the molecular weight above 300 then a bench top is almost certainly not for you.
You could also look at the data you have acquired on your 300MHz system. How was the signal to noise on that? If samples look a bit noisy on that then there is no way that they will give decent spectra on a bench top system.
John, many thanks for the input, very helpful! I think it's now clear that the bench top NMR option is not going to solve our problems and that we must find the finances to fix our 300 MHz instrument. No cheap solution on the cards :(

John, yes, the Uni coughed up 190 K for a new consol. Working as new now. But I think we would have been better off buying a good quality desktop instrument. Helium costs are becoming problematic.
Panayiotis Koutentis I'm glad that it is working now. I know that the running costs are high but you can do so much more with a 300MHz than you can with a benchtop. Here at GSK, we are recycling our Helium but this is only economical if you have a number of systems in one place.
John, we have a 500 and 300 in the same room. Would that make it worthwhile to attempt to recycle?
Since 2016, a few new models were introduced, including 1 by Bruker. Anyone has anymore insight on these new models? How are the performance compare to a typical 300MHz?
