I did my Ph.D. in oral tumor biology and we used the term "reserve cell layer" to describe the basal cell layer of the oral mucosa. Unfortunately, the term is rarely used nowadays and rarely finds its way in scientific texts. Does anyone have references for this term? I think the American association of oral pathologist uses it, but I am not sure whether the term is really established in the US or anywhere.
