In our experimental and demonstrative plots a significant number of plants were affected by abiotic stress - perhaps by the alternation between cold nights and hot days.
Initially, we thought that it is a disease, but the analysis performed in our plant pathology laboratory didn't confirmed one.
We address you in order to detect the biochemical phenomenon that led to these anomalies in the form of mutant (see the attached photo). Maybe there is some scientific literature about that. If so, please indicate it.
In the same time, the yields were highly reduced.

According to the Stress concept (started by Larcher) we have to distinguish between the STRESS as an action, such as environmental changes, temperature pulses, e.g. chilly nights etc. Such deviations of "usual" or control conditions may not provoke visual Symptoms, but the development of the plants will be different than for control plants. Only in longer time periods changes to the control become apparent as STRAIN, due to a kind of "Traumatism" some times long ago, or "early Stress". What ever the stress was, as long as we do not see visually any symptoms we call it early stress. But how to know it? Investigations in Krügers lab with fluorescence techniques showd that the effects of chilly night and the sensitivity of different cultivars to chilly nights can be calibrated in vivo in situ by the fast OJIP fluorescence transient. This way crop-yield losses can be estimated.
For sure in a later stage, stress symptoms will often appear exactly as you show two nice pictures and the crop yield will show the quantitative effect.
It's a typical case in "Precision Farming" and early detection of Stress.
