I am looking for a dye to colour agar media for microbiology , the previous that I ve tried fade under gamma radiation , that we use to sterilize .They was food dye or cochineal .So now I am thinking about inorganic dyes .
Food dye or cochineal indeed degrade under gamma irradiation, as do many synthetic azodyes. In case the dye is only for coloration and not to detect any specific interaction you may have better luck trying a pigment (colored particles in stead of soluble dye molecules). Some carotenoid pigments seem quite stable under gamma-radiation.
Perhaps the article below gives some clues to work with:
LEWIS, Norman F.; ALUR, Madhavesh D.; KUMTA, Umesh S. Role of carotenoid pigments in radio-resistant micrococci. Canadian journal of microbiology, 1974, 20.4: 455-459.
Colored carotenoids may be purchased from various sources and are not too expensive.
