I am developing a FE model of lumbar spine. Has anyone developed a model using tetrahedral mesh. Most of the papers which I read have used hex mesh. I wanted to know the advantage and disadvantages of both the meshes while developing a model.
Also I want to know how to go about in making the inter vertebral disc. I have read about mesh interpolation techniques which are used for this , I guess it wont work with tet mesh.

Are any of these models in open source domain and is there any way to use these models with their consent or a MoU or a collaboration. Because developing a new model is like reinventing the wheel , loads of time and effort is getting wasted in starting from zero.

You are going to get more accurate results if you use hexa mesh: tetrahedral elements are stiffer, so you need a larger number of elements to get the same quality of results. On the oter side, a tetrahedral mesh is simpler to be automatically obtained by most FE software; a good compromise could be using 10-nodes tetrahedra.
Hi Vicky. Unfortunately there are no open source models and from my experience the best model is the one you create yourself since you know how it was created. To get the model created by other person might give you more work and trouble due to different software versions and believe me it is easier to create a new model than try to 'repair' model 'inherited' from someone. With regards to your comment about published papers simulating complex structures such vertebrae always reporting hexa there is a simple reason behind. Mesh of the complex structures with tetrahedrals will provide large number of degenerated elements and elements violating the eshape limits even if you use elements with mid-side nodes. The hexa mesh will provide even mesh with minimum elements violating the shape rules.

I am stuck at creating the disc.
I am trying to extract the geometry from the mesh file and trying to loft it. But then I m not able to build the bulge of disc.
Is there any easy method to go about the same.
