Up until 1977, the idea that saturated fats clog arteries was considered controversial. However, when the United States Department of Agriculture declared saturated fats a health hazard, debate was extinguished. Consequently, a public health message to replace saturated fats with unsaturated oils spread about the globe, substantially altering the fatty acid content of the food supply. For nearly 30 years, researches tried to establish a connection between saturated fat intake and vascular diseases with little apparent success. Cambridge researcher Rajiv Chowdhury and colleagues recently published an analysis of the saturated fat research in the journal "Annals of Internal Medicine." The authors, concluded that “current evidence does not clearly support cardiovascular guidelines that encourage high consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids and low consumption of total saturated fats”, and that such guidelines may need reappraisal to reflect the current evidence.
