I have always been told that GUS staining solution, used in histochemical staining of plant tissues, needs to be stored indefinitely and can't be disposed in the sink. There are many compounds in the staining solution including two cyanide-ion containing compounds, Triton X-100 as well as the stain itself (beta-glucuronide). Can anyone provide any insight into what exactly within this mix is bad to dispose down the sink and why? I'm really curious. And also, does anyone know of a way to neutralize/disarm whatever the problem-compound is?
