One of my friend has sent me two FTIR curves of graphene oxide (sample 1- partially and sample 2 - fully oxidized). However, both of curves do not posses peaks for -OH functional group (usually at 3400 cm-1)
After oxidation process, oxirane, hydroxyl and carboxilic acid functional groups are generated on the surface of graphene. You should see a broad peak at the range of 3000-3500 cm-1 , not exactly 3400 cm-1
If your friend did the sample by completely drying on ATR-FTIR, then you will not see the broad peaks in that region. At the region the OH peaks are due to water molecules and if the sample is completely dried, the peak should not appear.
I do not agree with Mr. Mathesh. Even if the material is completely dry, the characteristic peaks should be visible. The oxidation reaction may not have occurred.
