In several articles, you can find that the authors refer to the amount of protein as "protein expression". When it is the case of mRNA amount, also is referred as "expression" (gene expression). My point is, in both cases is it correct to use the term "expression"?

For genes is very clear that "expression" is the correct form to describes the level of mRNA. But, for proteins (the result of the translation process) which term could be better or more accurate than "expression" or its use is appropriate when is talking about the amount of protein.
