Post herpetic neuralgia is common finding in herpes zoster infection. Gabapentine or pregabaline usually is prescribed by physicians in this cases. I want to compare the efficacy of these drugs by using RCT studies. Can anyone help me?
Hi Ramin,,, very interesting topic. Both pregabalin and gabapentin are used as first line drug for post herpetic neuralgia. There are very few studies which has compared pregabalin with gabapentin in this condition. There is an interesting study published in Pain Medicine in July 2011where direct comparison of pregabalin with gabapentin done in post herpetic neuralgia and showed pregabalin has six times more analgesic effect compared to gabapentin. Incidence of pedal oedema was higher with pregabalin.. Following link might help you.. Thanks
Besides it, pregablin has lower sedative properties and bedtime dosage also help patient to avoid untoward effects. Recently pregablin is taking over and very few brands available with gabapentin. Many newer combinations also include nortriptyline along with pregablin.
Due to some suicidal tendencies, Pregabalin has been withdrawn in some countries. At my place Pregabalin is not available. So from that context, Gabapentine may be better option.
