Fuel Cell modeling in Aspen Plus and Aspen Custom Modeler?

Some chemical processes, like the chlor-alkali production, generate significant amount of hydrogen as byproduct whose recovery within the chemical plant is not always possible. An efficient and attractive use of hydrogen is obtained installing a PEM fuel cell-based cogeneration unit, whose electricity and heat production covers part of plant consumptions. Practical application of this concept requires scaling up the fuel cell plant up to the multi-MW scale, an ongoing process with many open challenges where the development of dedicated modeling tools allows evaluating the plant expected performances and optimizing its operational strategies. This work presents the results of a the simulation activity modeling of an innovative 2 MW PEM fuel cell power plant.

Msd Khl - Good to know, that the attempt is being made to simulate fuel cell in Aspen's software program. FC is in the domain of Electrochemistry using the items like cathode, anode and electrylye. I am not sure which module of Aspen's suit of program would be most suitable. It may be good to approach Aspen's tech support to troubleshoot the problem.

My competency is in Hysis software for the facilities in upstream processing, Gas processing and LNG liquefration.

Ali Alwaeli - You are correct. PEM electrolyserr will be attractive in economy of scale. The technology is proven, commercial viability is about to catch up soon. Seevral pilots arer urning. Let me know which project you are working on H2 production.

As far as I know, there is no module to simulate a fuel cell in Aspen Plus/Hysys environment. Is this possible in the latest version (v10)?

I don't have experience using ACM to simulate Fuel Cell, but I use ACM to simulate my biomass growth. So I also need to worry about the mass balance. According to my experience, if you want to have correct mass balance. The inflow information you initially set in ACM should be exactly the same as the outflow information in you PLUS. After that, you export the ACM module to PLUS, no mass balance error may popup. I also got an ACM question. T.T...Would you mind help me about that? If you know how to address this situation?
