I haven't tried it, but this comes in the All Prep DNA/RNA micro kit manual ...

"Cells:

After harvesting, cells should be immediately lysed in Buffer RLT Plus to prevent unwanted changes in the gene expression profile. This highly denaturing lysis buffer inactivates RNases and other proteins to prevent RNA degradation as well as downregulation or upregulation of transcripts.

If the cells are to be shipped to another lab for nucleic acid purification, they should be pelleted, frozen in liquid nitrogen, and transported on dry ice. Alternatively, the cells can be mixed with RNAprotect Cell Reagent at room temperature and then shipped at ambient temperature."

We use Cryostor for such purposes:

We used it to transfer the cells to another lab to do single-cell ATAC-seq. This method is very sensitive to the chromatin organisation, although usual freezing bias the chromatin accessibility. But with CryoStor it was fine (of course you need to freeze them gradually, in isopropanol chamber for example). Basically you can sort the cells, then spin them and resuspend in Cryostor. The cells are viable afterwards. Also RNA and DNA extractions are not a problem.
