I’m studying sulfate attack in cementitious materials and need to perform XRD to identify degradation products. However, I’m unsure about the appropriate sampling depth:
Should I grind only the surface layer (e.g., 0–1 mm)?
Or is a deeper layer (e.g., 1–5 mm) necessary to capture the full extent of sulfate penetration?
Cement compositions are related to the stability, strength of structures and strict conditions of preparation, composition, mechanical strength are imposed on them. Therefore, it is necessary to consider that the additive is distributed throughout the sample. It is necessary to crush the cement composition and take 5 samples of powder for analysis.
