An incubation experiment is carried out in the laboratory under controlled conditions to study the nutrient release pattern in soil as amended with organic and mineral fertilization. For this, bulk soil sample (0-15 cm) is collected where no fertilizer was applied. The organic manures viz., FYM, compost materials are applied according to field application rate. Suppose FYM field application rate 5 t/ha, FYM for incubation study is applied 2.5g/kg of soil. Same you can determine for plant residue for decomposition study.

Mr.Ajay,it would be better to apply organic materials on carbon (dry ) basis in incubation studies. This will help to better interpret the loss of carbon as CO2 on decomposition process.Carbon sequestration (gain) in carbon can also be computed if the organic materials are applied on carbon basis.
