Dear Researchers,
I am looking to encapsulate some plant extracts in cyclodextrins, but I am unable to decide either water or ethanol based extracts or essential oils of particular plant will be more suitable. And, if possible, could anyone clarify the difference in extract and essential oil.

Plant Extract contains broad spectrum of phytochemicals ranging from polar to non polar compounds depends on type of solvent used during extraction ,while essential oil mostly contains non polar molecules. The biological activity of both substances are not similer. Normally Essential oil encapsulate using cyclodextrin to make them in powder form.
plant extract is better as it contains a wide variety of active ingredients, not only one as oil form, and it's easily formulated into different dosage forms as it's mainly in powder form. Moreover it's easily encapsulated as well inside B-cyclodextrin.
encapsulation using cyclodextrins is based on the fact that, the inner part of the ring is hydrophobic, which means that whatever you are trying to encapsulate should be hydrophobic as well as the carrier.
