I rather doubt it. I believe people are better when they assume responsibility for their own actions rather than deferring to a spirit. Beliefs that reduce personal responsibility ––– the devil made me do it, or Santa promotes generosity ––– reduces what I view as an important component of human nature.
First that this is a deliberate method to have a mystical giver who will gladden minds by giving gifts during a season.
And on the other hand, it is intended to create a psychological copy cat of this as human that we can impact humanity by sharing resources in the times of need and season with/to others.
On the overall, the perpetuity of this for this long shows that there is a hidden happiness with sharing.
Not only is it sociologically relevant but psychological fulfilling.
