Stimulation of endogenous GH and interleukin-6 receptors selectively activates different Jaks and Stats, with a Stat5 specific synergistic effect of dexamethasone http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10810294
Thank you for your response. Yes, I know that Hek293 express IL-6 receptors, but I am looking for whether they express the mRNA or the protein for the cytokine itself, not the receptor.
I believe they do not and I also remember reading a paper on that. I do not remember exactly where I read that but it was some HIV paper. I ll try to find that reference.
Looking the GEO database, HEK 293 appear to express detectable mRNA for IL-6 under some conditions and not under others. You can look at the data by searching for IL-6 AND HEK293. There are 14 results in the profile data.
concerning the amount of secreted protein, I can at least tell you that it is not enough for a strong activation of STAT3.
You can check supplementary figure 4b of this publication: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41589-018-0046-z. There, I compare STAT3 activation in response to IL-6 in the presence or absence of overexpressed wild type or engineered IL6 receptors. There is very little background activity of STAT3 without added IL-6.
