One of my rice mutant produce more than 50% seeds as empty seeds. The seeds when opened look like in the attached picture. Can anyone explain the phenotype in the attached picture. I am not sure if this is because of embryo development or endosperm development or fertilization problem?? .
I think it is embryo development problems if you do the recommended fertilization
I think embryos are ok, bud failed to develop endosperm after double fertilization due to shortage of boron, gypsum and zinc during grain filling at dough stage.
May be embryo was formed after fertilization, but aborted due to some reasons and the endosperm is developed by that time.
Seems as if both embryo and endosperm are absent. You can dissect the young developing fertilised ovules to check for presence of endosperm and embryo. If both embryo and endosperm are present, then there is no problem with fertilisation. Endosperm generally develops before embryo and if it aborts at any subsequent stage, then embryo too will abort. But why is the mutation affecting only 50% of caryopsis?
