I am working on a project where I isolate bacteria using Co-IP for further study. A colleague of mine recently asked why we chose Co-IP over ELISA, and I couldn't think of a good answer at the time. After looking into the literature, i still cannot decide which is the better approach for isolating bacteria.
Can anyone make a case, for or against, using Co-IP over ELISA? Is there some technical feature that makes one superior to the other that I am missing?

I am not comfortable with co-immunoprecipitation as a bacterial isolation method. Neither do I understand how bacteria will be isolated by Elisa method. Are you sure about this question? Please could you refer me to the literature you mentioned?

for detection, quantification and lots of samples, ELISA style assays probably the optimal method. If you need the option for scale up to isolate quantities or enrich samples, IP (or flow through columns with immobilized antibodies) might be the better strategy.

Yes, I would say so. But it also depends on your downstream application and what's available to you. ELISA also is fine to detect small amounts.
