I want to know the definition of operated in fed-batch mode/operated in batch mode/operated under continuous flow Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) / Microbial Electrolysis Cell(MEC).
These definition refer to chemical engineering notations.
Fed-batch mode means there is a physical inlet flow with no outlet, or vice versa,
Batch mode means there are neither inlet nor outlet flows (like with a vapor cooker),
Continuous flow means there are both inlets and outlets with, generally speaking but not limited too, the total inlet mass flows = total outlet mass flows, so that there is no mass accumulation.
Batch flow is the complete replacement of media once the bacteria have consumed the substrate.
Fed-batch flow is medium replaced at the end of each fed-batch cycle or a voltage of approximately 20 mV. About 20-30 percent ofthe previous solution is retained.
Continuous flow is mainly characterized by the hydraulic retention time (HRT).
