Thank you for this very relevant question.

Indeed, the criteria are a little more precise than those stated. A more detailed document will soon be available for download and will indicate more precisely the conditions for addition, control, and withdrawal. However, they are already in effect.

As an example, we decided to withdraw a journal that was on the list (Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences), considering that the change of its previous publisher in favor of a reliable publisher (De Gruyter Open) allowed us to examine it again. Our conclusions were favorable to this journal. Naturally, we will carefully monitor this type of case and will examine with great interest the possible reports (there has been none for the moment).

To take another example: Nexus Magazine has been added to the list. The publishing company having bought back its French version was also. I do not know if it is very useful to specify why, but some examples: Dissemination of pseudoscientific, conspiracy, and anti-Semitic informations and statements, as well as dangerous articles for public health. Indeed, this "newspaper" disseminates false scientific information, in medical matters, and pushes its readers to adopt a dangerous behavior for their own health, advancing pseudoscientific arguments. This makes it a particularly dangerous "newspaper".

Thank you for you dolos list. This is very useful list.

May I also suggest that you also need to re-check journals that are previously in the Beall's list (2016 is the last list, I think) and then became SCOPUS indexed last 2017, 2018 or 2019 (new one in SCOPUS). You may temporarily remove it from your list for some times to give them chance, find out if the their activity is still a predatory act and put it back with a note (verified again).

I think the SCOPUS had also initiated re-evaluation for those journals that are seems to be probable predatory journals and remove it to their list once proven.

The Beall's list also helped publisher to improve their publications not just to publish probable predatory journal.

Dear Prof. Alex. I came across publishers like Taylor & Francis, Thieme, etc. These are not predatory. So maybe you should check this out.

Often, publishers are on a list like DOAJ (or another) and we add them to the Dolos list anyway. In my opinion, these "whitelists" are not rigorous enough.

Thank you for the list. I found out about it via colleagues and was surprised to see some names on it, thank you for the warning. It would be nice to establish also a mirroring platform as a guide to those who are seeking where to publish, since the reality became overpopulated with scammers. If you do not have funds to pay for publication (like majority of my colleagues are), let' sa say in neuroscience, biophysics and nonlinear analysis of electrophysiological data..what would be the recommendations? It is very time consuming to find appropriate Journal, and sometimes they keep your work for months (like in our case, more than 9 months, at the moment) just to refuse it for publication...Then your work is gradually having less and less chances to be published at all, until unfortunately it loses its novelty. Could you suggest, for example, where our students could try to publish a book originated from their PhD, and avoid predatory journals?

This is indeed a problem of not being able to publish anymore because the scientific publishing sector works rather badly. On top of that, I do not really have solutions for articles that end up falling into the "lost science". It is sometimes quite difficult to find the right journal and, after a certain time, the paper becomes outdated or unpublishable. This is a real problem that is, unfortunately, directly caused by the general behavior of legitimate publishers (which are far from perfect). So today I would recommend to hold on, not to get discouraged, and especially to take the time to carefully select the journal.

I would even add that, in my opinion, predatory publishing has taken root because of the enormous flaws of legitimate publishing (https://www.editage.com/insights/predatory-and-pseudo-scientific-publishing-a-major-threat-to-scientific-rigor-and-research).

Then, concerning the book publishers, I will inquire about the fields you gave me in examples and you will send my suggestions in private message.

I have just been duped into attending a Primary Care Congress in Rome along with other naive clinicians and researchers run by Pulsus. We were combined with an equally duped Oncology conference into one room. No sign of Pulsus. A local freelance organiser was contracted by them to be the Registration officer and who ended up running around trying to unite 4 scam conferences. Each participant had paid up to €1000 to be there. I can’t believe I was duped like this nor the others. How can I alert more people about them? Has the British fraud office ever been contacted?

I will finally add that if your misunderstanding is accompanied by a concern about some of your papers, know that I often specify that a researcher, publishing with a low quality journal or a publisher that is not serious, is not necessarily incompetent. A publisher can be serious at first and become a predatory, and ell-established researchers may also publish in these journals because they simply do not know the extent of the problem.
