Predatory publishing can only be restricted if the authors do not get any credit for publishing in predatory journals. For example such publications would not be considered during thesis submission, job applications, promotions in service, etc.

I understand your recommendations and I agree. It will surely take a softer position than on the Dolos list. On our side, concerning the practices of some publishers, we have already started to prepare three reports which will be sent to two DG of the European Commission (competition and health and food safety) and to an American institution (US Federal Trade Commission), because Yes, some practices are illegal.

Regarding the threats of lawsuits from predatory publishers, they will not succeed. However, I have already received more disturbing threats (containing my address, personal information, threats to my family). I prefer to warn you that when you try to attack the predatory publishing, it does everything to silence you. You have to be sure to be ready for that, as well as for the campaigns of discrediting, which I'll give you an overview on ResearchGate questions that I asked and on Google. It surprised me but I do everything I can to give the least possible credit to these attacks.

This collective would be primarily aimed at the press and the general public. The collective aspect of this project would give more weight to the opposition to predatory publishing. Regarding the scientific community, the Dolos list remains sufficient for the moment.

It is not a question of evaluating the work of researchers, but the quality of journals and publishers. Researchers are the first victims of predatory publishing and many well-established researchers have already been scammed by these companies. Publishing in a predatory journal does not make the researcher incompetent, it makes him a victim of this sector. Dear Prof. Alexandre Georges: At least in Austria it has been announced several weeks / some month ago that the practices of "predatory, cheating and and fake" Journals, Publishers and or Congress 'Organizers" are now on the spot.

I know University librarians (University of Graz or also Vienna, for instance) informing their clientel (students as well as senior researchers) very detailed about the problem.

Unfortunately I haven't heard or read about the Austrian campaign against those practices since then or at least for the last 4-6 weeks.... and I have to go into archives to find some details on the "campaign" which 'proudly' was announced in newspaper as well as TV-News and scientific 'spots'....

Dear Prof. Alexandre Georges, I regret that not all of those followers (e.g. in our project " ETHICAL AND QUESTIONABLE PRACTICES IN RESEARCH AND PUBLISHING " have seen your new question and /or are willing to comment, if not to follow your intention as posted above - but I do hope!

I guess there must be established at least a "critical mass" beforehand to arrive at the "collective" of 'advocates of truth'.

An effort can be made to bring out the flaws in research published in predatory journals. Platform such as retraction watch exists for identifying research frauds. Serious academics should also refrain citing sources from these journals. Editors and reviewers could check this to some extent by rejecting papers or asking the authors whenever such citations appear to remove them.

This action is the right one against predatory publishers!

In my opinion any publication, published anywhere has to be cited. One can point out the flaws in the papers published in predatory journals. If we do not at least mention them in our publications, others will think that the publications have been overlooked.

I have had experiences where some of my work have been ripped off in real time, especially when I am discussing sustainable development and environmental development from a social scientist/humanist perspectives.

I believe it would be a good idea to be co authors jointly with more experienced researchers and writers coercing the early career researchers into and initiating them into the research culture by sharing ideas and coexisting in real time.

I am surprised to see the exhaustive list of predatory and fake journals, and I am shocked to see that I have my few articles published in some of them, feeling sorry for myself to be so ignorant. I didnt know about the Dolos list, even though I had done some search about the predatory journals,and even published article on the same subject. Thanks for the mission, and I am sure genuine researchers would benefit from the list and lot many will join you in this mission. As mentioned by Prof Amitav Banerjee , editors can insist the authors to not cite articles from predatory journals, and even mention this in the instructions for the author section of their website/ print journals. If the list of references are predominantly from such journals, then the authors may be asked for major corrections. When the manuscript is being sent for peer review, a request may also be sent to the reviewer to make a note of such citations.

Institutions are already well aware of what predatory publishing is (and Jeffrey's blog has been a great help for that). But updating these resources for ongoing information as proposed here would contribute effectively to improving the vigilance of researchers.
