We optimized a protocol and media composition for tissue culture of Abaca (Musa textilis Nee) using the varieties we have on the facility. However, upon using different varieties from the collection obtained all over the country, the explant seems to be unresponsive. No shoots formed and severe browning (may be caused by phenolic compounds) could be observed.
Yes, shoot induction depends on endogenous hormone levels. We have published shoot induction in different varieties of lettuce (Plant Physiology 152: 2088-2104, 2010) in which endogenous levels for shoot regeneration varied a lot. If you get callus or shoot dies out, then you should increase shoot inducing growth hormones.

Yes, see this paper. Authors used 3 banana varieties for tissue culturing. Varieties' performances are different under same tissue culturing medium. The components of a medium might need to adjust. According with plant propagation on in vitro conditions of bananas and plantains, you have to take care in relation with genome composition.
First the genome ploidy A (Acuminata) and then the ploidy B (Balbisiana).
For Acuminata AA, AAA, AAAA, AB, AAAB the media has to have citokinines (1-5 mgrs/L). and for balbisiana BB, ABB, BBB, AABB, ABBB, you may decresi the amount of citokinines (0-3 mgrs/L).
To avoid the phenolic compounds it it recommended to use int the media Phluoroglucinol 162 mgrs./L or L-Cysteine 2-5 mgrs/L as well citric acid or ascorbic acid (100mgrs/L).
