The well-known Buckley-Leverret Theory is developed to study waterflowing problem in Oil recovery.
My concern is whether the same theory is applicable to gas/liquid systems, with such applications as gas injection into oil reservoirs?
If not, what makes it not suitable for such systems?
I also want to add that the assumption of piston-like displacement by the BL theory also requires that capillary numbers are low. BL theory does not hold for turbulent conditions. compare displacement in gas-liquid systems during spontaneous imbibition (see attached paper)
Yes, it does. The viscosity ratio between water and air is 50, so, BL theory serves Hydrology the way it serves Oil Recovery in the case the water is pumped out.
In the case Oil is displaced by Gas, viscous fingering of gas dominate the flow pattern. The solution comes from BL Egs., subjected to stability analysis. I have number of papers on the subject, uploaded on my RG site.
