I am writing an essay on the development and possible impact of operations research (OR) on defence planning in different European countries. Finding secondary sources on OR-development in different countries is, however, not that easy. Does anyone have some suggestions?

Dear Ole, Not exactly secondary literature, and only late 50s and the 1960s), but it might help, to have a look in the online NATO archives, for instance AC/137-D/23 ('POLICY FOR MUTUAL' SUPPORT IN OPERATIONAL RESEARCH BETWEEN UNITED STATES AND ALLIES').

Have a look at http://ifors.org/, maybe you find something there. During the 1960s and 70s the OECD published a lot of scientific stuff (e.g. on planning methods) that came out of commissions, working group meetings etc.
During the same period OR, cybernetics and systems science, game theory and other related topics were quite popular topics in journals and yearbooks of (national) associations for management, business administration and economics. From there, they soon found their way into military-related journals and handbooks. Browsing some library catalogues should provide you with plenty of these sorts of publications. Hope that helps…
